Gansberg
One evening, Catherine Genovese came home from work as she did every night. She parked her car and started walking to her apartment door, about 100 feet away. As she was walking she was grabbed and stabbed by a man she had noticed before she began walking from her car. Her screams alarmed several neighbors, one of whom shouted at her attacker who walked off. She got up and continued towards her apartment. As she was walking she was attacked again by the same man. Again her screams alerted the neighbors who turned on their lights which scared away the attacker. This time crawling to try to make it home her attacker found her and delivered the final blow. There were thirty-eight people who had witnessed the attack and none of them did anything. One man called the police but it was very much too late.

Over the summer I went on a trip to French Polynesia where I learned about the dying reefs. I knew they weren't in great shape but I didn't know just how bad it was or how horrible the consequences would be if we didn't do anything. I learned about what is causing the coral to die and what I can do to help. They taught us about what they were doing to help save the coral that is almost dead and let us help them plant new coral. I saw first hand what is happening to the coral and what that is doing to the oceans ecosystem. This issue is bigger than just one person or one group. I realized that not very many people know about it. It is simply unawareness that is a huge part of the issue. I learned so much about how our world is taking a turn for the worst. I also learned a lot about myself. I asked myself why I didn't know about this sooner or why people don't talk about it. I realized that if I wanted to help make a difference there were things that I could do. There were things in my life that I could change just a little bit that would help in the long run. Whenever I was asked what I am passionate about I always got nervous because I didn't think there was anything. But now I can confidently say that I a m passionate about saving the reef!

Satrapi
In a school for girls it is the first day of class. The girls attend their anatomy class where the teacher is telling them about what they are going to be doing in class. He explains that due to the recent changes in government, the curriculum has been changed. They can no longer learn by drawing nude people, their model must remain completely covered. All of the girls look confused and disappointed. They try to make the best of it but they don't learn anything about anatomy, they only learn how to draw drapes. This is the beginning of many more changes to come.
